It seems like everyone’s talking about making money online these days… “it’s easier than ever… the 4 billion plus worldwide internet users are your potential customers…”
And you’re thinking – OK, but what do I sell? What field should I get into? And How do I get noticed online?
Before we get into answering these questions – there are a number of ways in which money can be made online. You may have a product that you want to sell, this could be a physical product or products or even a digital product or you may want to write about other people’s/companies’ products and earn money for doing that… the latter is called affiliate marketing and you can read more about what this is and how it works here.
Where Do You Start?
Which ever route you decide to go down the principles are the same and that’s what we’ll discuss now.
To answer the initial questions a few things need to be looked at…
- Do you have something that you are very passionate about?
- Is that something that people search for online?
If the answer to the questions above is yes, then that is possibly the perfect area for you to get into – it’s much easier to write about a subject that you’re interested in and that you love and perhaps more importantly it’s easier to sustain it, week after week, month after month, year after year… with a few provisos…
Some market areas are very popular and it maybe difficult to get your foot through the door so to speak… there maybe, literally, thousands of competing websites talking about the same thing.
That’s not to say that you still couldn’t make it in that field – but you would have to be a bit imaginative and think outside the box.
Say, for example, your passion is fitness…
Well, that’s an area that millions of people are very interested in and will be searching for online.
So that’s a great deal of potential customers there – however, equally there are going to be hundreds upon hundreds of websites who are going to be talking about all things fitness and many of them will be big brands that will have a lot more leverage and sway with people than yourself (at least initially, before you are well-established).
So, how do you get noticed in the field of fitness online?
There are two possible routes that you could go down:
- To go for an area of fitness that is a bit more specialised or that is not so generic… or in other words, choose a specialised niche area.
- To have a website about all things fitness, but when you write articles – choose areas that won’t have a massive number of websites competing with you… that is choose ‘low hanging fruit keywords’ (see below) for the titles of your posts or articles. And even if you are selling physical products – use the same principle for the titles of your product pages.
Specialised Niche Area
So you’re passionate about fitness and that’s the area you want to get into in relation to your website.
The key to make it work is to concentrate on an area of fitness that is not so saturated in terms of the market and what other people and other websites are already talking about.
As an example – if your website concentrates on a particular form of exercise that is not that common, but still has a certain number of search engine searches… then you will have a much greater chance of success.
The possibility of you ranking high in search engines when people search for what you are talking about or selling will be much higher when there are fewer websites competing with you in relation to this.
Low Hanging Fruit Keywords
Keywords are the words or phrases that people type into search engines to find what they are looking for.
By using these keywords in the title of your post or article, search engines will be able to match the web page that contains your article with the relevant search query.
There is a term in keyword research called ‘the low hanging fruit keyword’… basically, this is a low competition keyword.
Like a fruit tree, it is the fruit that is typically smaller (equivalent to getting less traffic), that has more abundance. There are many more of them and they have far less competition, because most people naturally compete for the “larger” fruit at the top of the tree (the high traffic keywords).
So, as you can see and as mentioned above – if you use low hanging fruit keywords in the titles of your posts, then the chances of you getting noticed when people search for what you are writing about is much higher.
Keyword Research
With both options above – the key is to do research on what people are searching for and what keywords people are using in search engine queries.
There are keyword research tools that will allow you to find the best keywords to use in your articles, one of these tools is a platform called Jaaxy.
Whether you choose a specialised niche area and concentrate on that alone or if you choose to cover all things relating to your chosen field (in this case fitness) – you will need to do keyword and market research to find out what people are searching for and how to best leverage that information to your advantage in terms of getting your website to rank high in search engines and SERP.
Jaaxy can do this all for you and literally take care of all aspects of your keyword and market research.
Conclusion
It may seem daunting at first and you may feel overwhelmed by the multitudes of things that are sold online and the many areas that you could go into…
What you need to do is to take a step back and choose an area that interests you and take it from there… following the steps above.
Once you’ve decided what field you want your online business to be in and what form it should take (selling physical/digital products or affiliate marketing), you can learn about the techniques that will make you successful on your chosen path.

Once I decided to give affiliate marketing a try, I was very excited. A lot of good results have come out of that decision. But I continue to learn. One of the things I have been working recently is on optimizing my posts for SEO. The importance of keywords is outstanding. I really would like to focus on low hanging fruit keywords.
SEO is amazing… if you do it properly, the results speak for themselves and keywords are the key, so to speak…
